Gayton Road Bridge Update
Bugbrooke Parish Council has been raising concerns about the condition of Gayton Road Bridge for many years and over the last few years the growing impact its closure is having on residents, businesses and surrounding communities. Since the bridge was fully closed in September 2024, frustration has continued to grow as residents face longer journeys, increased traffic on unsuitable rural roads, and ongoing uncertainty about when a permanent solution will be delivered.
In recent months, the Parish Council has intensified its efforts to ensure this issue remains a priority for West Northamptonshire Council. The Council has formally challenged the lack of progress, writing directly to WNC’s Acting Chief Executive and highlighting the significant social, economic and safety consequences of the prolonged closure. The Parish Council has also called for greater transparency, clearer accountability between the organisations involved, and a defined plan for reopening this vital route.
The closure is affecting far more than day-to-day travel. Local businesses have reported reduced customer numbers, school transport routes have become longer and less reliable, access to healthcare services has been impacted, and concerns are growing about the condition of diversion routes now carrying traffic levels they were never designed to accommodate. The Parish Council is extremely concerned about the long-term impact on the village and neighbouring communities.
Working closely with Ward Councillor and Parish Council Chair Phil Bignell, as well as local MP Sarah Bool, the Parish Council has provided detailed evidence of the bridge closure’s impact on residents, local services and the wider economy. This information has been used to demonstrate the strategic importance of restoring this key access route and to strengthen the case for urgent investment.
The latest development is that West Northamptonshire Council, supported by MP Sarah Bool, has applied for Department for Transport funding to help deliver the necessary repairs. In addition, a petition launched by Sarah Bool has now attracted more than 500 signatures from residents of Bugbrooke and surrounding villages, demonstrating the strength of local feeling and the widespread demand for action. The Parish Council will continue to press for progress and keep residents informed as further updates become available.
