parish council
We are the first point of contact for village matters—whether it’s a concern about traffic, a proposal for a new footpath, or ideas for a community event. We’re here to amplify your voice and work in partnership with other authorities and organisations to get things done.
What is a parish council and what does it do?
We focus on issues that directly affect our village and quality of life, including:
- Maintaining village assets, such as benches, noticeboards, street lighting, bus shelters, and play areas
- Supporting community facilities like the cemetery, allotments, and recreational spaces
- Representing your views to West Northamptonshire Council and other bodies, especially on planning applications and development
- Funding local projects and services, including grants for community groups, youth initiatives, and environmental schemes
- Organising and supporting events that bring residents together and celebrate village life
How the Parish Council is Funded
The council receives funding via a local precept, which is a portion of your council tax. This allows us to invest directly in Bugbrooke—maintaining public spaces, supporting village groups, and responding to your needs.
Council Meetings: Your Voice Matters
We believe in transparency and public involvement, and welcome residents, press, police, and ward councillors to attend our meetings. They are held monthly at Bugbrooke Community Centre and follow a structured agenda.
Public Participation:
- A short public session is held at the start of each meeting—up to 10 minutes—to hear your views
- You’re welcome to submit questions in advance or raise topics on the day
- The Chairman may also invite speakers with relevant input on agenda items
- Councillors respond through the Chairman to ensure clarity and order
What Powers We Have
Parish councils are statutory bodies with limited but important powers, granted by law. These include:
| Area | Bugbrooke Parish Council Can… | Bugbrooke Parish Council Cannot… |
|---|---|---|
| Planning | Comment on applications & express local views | Make final decisions or overrule planning authorities |
| Local Facilities | Provide and maintain certain amenities like playgrounds, rubbish bins, and bus shelters | Manage schools, roads, health care, or emergency services |
| Community Wellbeing | Issue grants and promote local projects and charities | Set policies or enforce laws outside our remit |
| Public Engagement | Communicate with residents and raise issues with the relevant authorities | Guarantee specific outcomes or bypass higher council regulations |
Why Become a Councillor?
Being a parish councillor is a fantastic way to make a real difference. You’ll help guide the future of Bugbrooke, respond to residents’ needs, and contribute to decisions that shape the village. It’s a role open to anyone who meets the legal requirements and is passionate about their local area—with manageable time commitments and a rewarding sense of impact.
Bugbrooke Parish Council is built on transparency, community spirit, collaboration, and care. We welcome questions, ideas, and participation from all residents. Whether you’re new to the village or a lifelong local, this is your parish council—and your input helps shape our direction.
Want to get involved, attend a meeting, or find out more about our work? You’re always welcome.
Who makes up the parish council?
Bugbrooke Parish Council is made up of volunteer councillors elected every four years and supported by a professional Parish Clerk. Together, they ensure decisions are well-informed, legal, and financially responsible.
- The Chairman leads council meetings, represents us at events, and fosters trust within the community
- Parish Councillors bring your views to the table, make impartial decisions, and stay connected to local concerns
- The Parish Clerk ensures legal compliance, manages finances, and advises the council on policies and procedure
