Help Reduce the Risk of Fire in Bugbrooke
With the recent prolonged spell of warm, dry weather, the risk of outdoor fires has increased significantly. Dry grass, hedgerows and vegetation can ignite much more easily than many people realise, and even a small flame can spread quickly.
There have been a small number of fires in local farmers’ fields recently, which serves as a reminder that everyone can play a part in helping to keep our community safe.
How you can help
There are some simple steps every household can take to reduce the risk of fire:
- Keep grass and vegetation around your home well maintained.
- Avoid leaving piles of dry garden waste or other combustible materials close to buildings or fences.
- Dispose of cigarettes safely and never throw them onto dry grass or verges.
- Take extra care when using barbecues, fire pits or chimineas, and never leave them unattended.
- Keep matches and lighters safely out of the reach of children.
- If you spot a fire, however small, report it promptly by calling 999.
A message for parents and carers
We have also been made aware of a small number of minor bonfires involving children, including the burning of old school test papers.
Although these may seem harmless, lighting fires during dry weather can quickly get out of control and put people, wildlife, property and farmland at risk. Please take a few moments to speak with your children about the dangers of lighting fires and the importance of behaving responsibly outdoors.
Deliberately or recklessly starting a fire can amount to a criminal offence, including arson in some circumstances, and can carry serious legal consequences. More importantly, it can place lives and livelihoods at risk.
